Can Reflexology help Cancer Patients?

Kay is a Reflexologist and Massage Therapist in Listowel, Co. Kerry.

Reflexology aims to help muscles relax and encourage the body to use its own resources more effectively.

As a result, reflexology is believed to help with a wide variety of conditions and disorders including:
  • coping with stress and anxiety, reducing tension
  • pain relief
  • help lift patient's mood and give them a feeling of well-being

Reflexology will not fix serious health problems but if used regularly it will enhance any other treatments you are receiving by keeping the circulation stimulated and the lymph system active. You should also experience feelings of vitality and well-being after reflexology treatment which encourages the healing process throughout the body.Several studies have looked at using reflexology to help cancer patients with symptoms such as pain, sickness and anxiety. We cannot say whether or not reflexology has a great effect on cancer patients as these studies involved small numbers of patients and the results are mixed. Some studies suggest that reflexology can reduce pain and anxiety in patients with metastatic cancer.
In my own experience:

I see there will be quite a dramatic reaction to the first treatment in various forms such as increased bowel movements, cold type symptoms or skin problems. This is a very healthy sign which means that the treatment has encouraged the release of harmful toxins from the body
Perhaps as a result of their improved breathing, they also were better able to perform daily tasks such as climbing a flight of stairs, getting dressed or going grocery shopping.
Most of my clients who are also cancer survivors tell me relief of stress is tremendously important in their self-care routines post-cancer treatment. We lead such stressful lives these days! New clients are often surprised at the end of a Reflexology session by an understanding of how different they feel when stress is relieved.
Reflexology is also known to relax patients and can help them deal with pain, drug side effects, emotional stress and so on. A must for the carers too in my opinion.  I have given treatments to cancer patients in hospital and the consultants are all for it.

As a qualified Reflexologist I work according to my clients and what they present to me. Based on my experience on working with Cancer clients. Reflexology has an impact on specific organs, promotes a relaxation effect on the body. Some of my clients demonstrate a a positive outcome for reduction in pain.Scientific evidence does not support claims that reflexology cures cancer or any other disease. However, it has been shown to help promote relaxation and reduce pain in some people. Some of my clients love this treatment on there cancer journey.
